Fairy Tales In Yoghourt “High on Christmas” (2022/2025)

Mark your calendars for December 10. This date commemorates Otis Redding’s passing — an artist who holds a special place in the Christmas canon thanks to his iconic 1968 performance of “Merry Christmas Baby,” as well as his influence on Will Sheff and Okkervil River’s indie classic “Listening to Otis Redding at Home During Christmas Day.” December 10 is also the release date for Nantes, France’s Fairy Tales in Yoghourt’s upcoming Wish You a E.P. Christmas, which I am very, very intrigued to hear.

The first single from the EP has already been released, currently titled “High on Christmas.” I say currently because the song was originally called “Christmas, Inc.” when it appeared with different orchestration back in 2022. I loved the song/E.P. announcement on Facebook, which provided some of that background:

“The track was discreetly released in a different production a few years ago, the real ones know, and had received a buzz that I would call minimal. This time we hired an orchestra, so it’s going to be profitable.”

That orchestra is worth every penny! It gives the song a classic sheen that contrasts beautifully with the alt-pop, even psych-pop tendencies of the band. I can’t wait to hear the rest.

Of note: since beginning this post last night, Fairy Tales in Yoghourt have put the EP up for preorder, along with another preview track — the short and psychedelic “How Does Jesus Christ Do It? (Angels Reply).”

Bottom Line: This is sounding like a winner so far! Now… do I delay finalizing my Christmas mix simply to hear the rest of the E.P….

Pinemoon “Christmas Together” (2022)

The swell of new releases is beginning… and here I find myself writing about a song from two years ago. I stumbled upon Copenhagen’s Pinemoon, and they just hit me right. 2022’s “Christmas Together” is a swooning, shoegazing trip that reset my mood last night. Searching for Christmas music is digging in the digital mines and more often than not, feeling hopeless and frustrated. Merry Christmas! So when you stumble upon something like “Christmas Together,” it calms your nerves and lets you fall asleep, ready to dig another day.

Bottom Line: This is a shoegaze Christmas classic.

Skegss “December” (2022)

Sneaky. Releasing this song as a b-side in February of 2022, Australian punks Skegss are many things to me at the moment. Their song, “December,” is an extremely recent find; the first post of the 2024 holiday season; perhaps the first song I can say will be on my 20th annual Christmas mix. The song is so good, and with 7K+ streams on Soundcloud, I just assumed that it had been picked up by Christmas A Gogo or Von Pip, but alas… it looks to have snuck by them as well. The whole plan with this site was to have more stuff like this handed to me on a silver platter… but 12 years now and I’m beginning to think I was mistaken.

How about we talk a little about the song? Are you a fan of the Sleepwalkers Christmas EP? (Well, you should be). Have you been dreaming of a chill Christmas song that might have been sung by Julian Casablancas of the Strokes? Put that idea in your head and press play. Then stroll around thinking about how great it will sound on your Christmas mix. Maybe get yourself a treat and sit on a bench. Yeah. Deep breaths. Christmas comes for us all.

Bottom Line: A killer debut track for the 2024 season dug up from the early months of 2022. Welcome to the new year, you’re going to like this one.

Litany “Die Hard (Is a Christmas Film)” (2022)

Back in 2020, Christmas a Go Go highlighted the vast amount of Christmas songs that tackle the subject of whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not. CAGG even updated the post last year to reflect new additions to the canon (still dated 2020 though!). I thought one of the songs on that massive list deserved a little bit more attention – and here we are. Litany is an alternative pop artist from England (and just signed to Nettwerk as of this week) whose 2022′ “Die Hard (Is a Christmas Film)” with an earworm chorus that will torment you for the rest of the holiday season. It is a fun torment though… strolling down the street singing “yippee, ki yay motherfucker.”

Bottom Line: A new addition to the top tier of Die Hard/Christmas classics.

PHONY (featuring Ratboys) “Christmas Eve Day”, “Wedding and Funeral Family” (2022)

Have you ever wondered what an Elliott Smith Christmas song might sound like? I say this, and realize that you could make a case for adding “Junk Bond Trader,” “King’s Crossing” or “Angel in the Snow,” should you be so inclined, I suppose… Well. Where do I go with this review other than saying, “Christmas Eve Day” by PHONY (the solo project of Neil Berthier, guitarist for Joyce Manor, ex-Donovan Wolfington) sure sounds like a great Elliott Smith Christmas-adjacent song. This song shares the same beautiful, haunting qualities I’ve always loved from Elliott, though best compared to his earlier, less-ornate work. The finger picking, the harmony provided by the excellent Julia Steiner from Ratboys, even the quality of Neil’s voice – I can’t shake that feeling I’m listening to a ghost when I close my eyes. That second verse is particularly vivid, especially with that repeated line at the end.

I don’t mean to only talk about comparisons with this review. I just can’t shake them. I do believe that PHONY made something quite beautiful here, and just like an Elliott Smith record, the unflinching introspection does put you in a particular kind of space. Do you like that space? I own every Elliott Smith record, so I sure do, but I know many (my wife included) who do not. But not every song here is for everyone, but every song is surely for someone.

For folks who are on board for PHONY from that first track, “Wedding & Funeral Family,” also has some pretty explicit Christmas imagery, and Neil shakes the Elliott Smith vibe of “Christmas Eve Day” for more of an emo vibe. And yes, there are many flavors of emo, and that is a term that some folks avoid, but the song is worth it.

Did you think the first song was heavy? “Wedding & Funeral Family” takes the emotion to a new level. The record was written after Neil’s father passed from dementia, and I find this song so personal that it feels like an invasion of privacy, like I’m peering through a crack in the door. Again, I find these things interesting and beautiful – and I grant it may not be quite what your mix is looking for, but it might be what you need someday.

Bottom Line: I’ve been creeping on your Bandcamp purchases, and am quite pleased to discover this song, this band, and the Ratboys connection makes it even sweeter. These are deeply lovely and emotional songs for the kind of person that needs a hit of this on occasion.

Idaho Green “Christmas Toonite” (2022)

I get contacted by a lot of bands and PR folks, and I’d say about 97% of them have never visited this silly site before. When I hear from someone, and indeed, they seem to have a grasp of what this site is about… well… it puts me in a very good mood. This site exists both to help you make your Christmas mix… and to help ME make MY Christmas mix. Thus when I received a nice note from Idaho Green, a band that claims both Brooklyn and Huntley Project, Montana as their home, hipping me to a fantastic indie rock/spud punk (ha!) Christmas song of theirs, I simply responded with “Yes. You are my jam.” The result of a bit of extra studio time, a few loose riffs and a silly chorus, their 2022 Christmas single, “Christmas Toonite,” shines with crunchy, dirty guitars, a bit of swearing, and a relaxed swagger not often found on a Christmas song. The song begins with a bit about being stuck in Montana during a snowstorm, but quickly pivots into one of the happiest, upbeat Christmas songs you could ever want. The song is downright joyful. So spread some joy, throw a buck at this song, and add it to your life.

Bottom Line: I sometimes struggle to find wonderful, upbeat Christmas songs… so when a song like “Christmas Toonite” comes to you, close your eyes, smile and say, “Yes. You are my jam.”

Heyrocco “Christmas Shopping in Santa Monica” (2022)

Is a band from the town they started in, or the town they have resided in for a while? Like, are the National a Cincinnati band, or a Brooklyn band? I find myself mulling this over as I think about Heyrocco… who are either from Charleston, South Carolina or Los Angeles. So, pick your flavor, and now that I’ve placed them in the general United States, we can move on. Heyrocco’s most recent release also happens to be their excellent 2022 Christmas song, “Christmas Shopping in Santa Monica.” This song has a late 90s – early 2000’s powerpop feel that I love. The jangling rhythm guitars, the layered vocal harmonies, all the “oh yeahs,” I’m transported back in time. It’s a fun one, you’ll like it.

Of note, this is not the only Heyrocco Christmas song… there are a few Bandcamp accounts that all appear to be associated with the band, and they covered (as did everyone) Wham’s “Last Christmas” back in 2014. Low-fi demo quality, but interesting to hear in comparison. Around 2:20 it gets weird, which is worth a listen if you’re curious.

Bottom Line: This is the kind powerpop that I love.

Evgenya Redko – Odė Kal​ė​doms (2022)

Let’s get this party started right.

This blog is now devoted to Lithuanian disco-influenced pop. Evgenya Redko‘s Odė Kal​ė​doms kicks off with the undeniable “Pakyl​ė​tas Gruodis,” (Google translation – “Exalted December”) delighting us with its Nile Rodgers-inspired guitar rhythms, daring you not to love it. Using some rather inelegant Google translation, I believe the song to be about wanting to pause time at Christmas and spending those moments with the one you love. I can get behind the sentiment, but I am mainly here for that groove. So, so infectious – give me more! The two songs that follow are both excellent, more conventional pop songs: “Beproti​š​kai Ilgiuosi” (translation: I Miss You So Much) and “Tavo Rankose Per Kal​ė​das” (translation: In Your Hands at Christmas). I can’t find lyrics for those at the moment… but man… you don’t really need anything else than that first song. It is so damn fun.

Bottom Line: Who knew I’d love Lithuanian disco so much? Maybe you all saw this coming, but I sure did not.

Collars “Christmas In The 90s” (2022)

I have this feeling that someone sent me this song last year… and I just can’t remember who. It was on my Soundcloud list last year, and somehow I didn’t write about it, and I have no clue why. My best guess is that I added it without really listening to it, which in the heat of the season… well… it happens. A well-meaning, “save something to listen to later,” kind of gesture. Well, if you tipped me off on this, and I have plum forgot, I apologize.

NOW, how about this very British bop about “Christmas in the 90s!” (Look at me using bop…) Hidden towards the end of a proper, non-Christmas record, 2022’s Clyde, Collars are really channeling the Britpop wars (well, the war between the Gallagher brothers), the Hacienda, raves, and gentrification. Wrap that up with a catchy-as-hell beat and that wonderful layered ending… this one is bound to be a popular mix-addition.

Bottom Line: This song is a ton of fun. Pair it with The Futureheads’ “Christmas in the 80’s” to begin a tracklist of decade-specific holiday fare!

Hotel Lux “The Carvery” (2022)

Portsmouth, England’s Hotel Lux dropped a nice jangly sing-along Christmas cracker last year, and like many things in life… I missed it. The song is very English, with some references to Nigella (which I assume to be English chef and writer Nigella Lawson) that may be lost on us stateside, and a sing-along chorus purpose-built for shouting out down at the pub. Hotel Lux’s lead singer, Lewis Duffin, excels in the milieu of talk-singing post-punk (e.g. Art Brut), and this song does perhaps highlight that he’s not going on The Voice anytime soon. But fuck, neither am I. The character of his voice is what matters, and the creaks in those boards aren’t a bug, but a feature, as I detest perfection. The song came together quickly with what I have gleaned was some gratis studio time for a charitable purpose (Shelter, a UK homelessness charity), and you can actually see the process in one of the videos posted below. It is rather fun to watch the song come together. Hopefully, they’ll grab some more time to record another this year, as this is actually their second Christmas single, following 2019’s “Stop the Calvary.” Lean into this guys, I’m here for it.

Bottom Line: A solid pub singalong that gets better with subsequent listens.
