I have lost my headphones. Thus, no new posts (likely) until I return home. But I am curious, what was your favorite song you discovered this year? Perhaps tweet at me at @xmasunderground or leave a comment here.
Merry Christmas everyone.
We are the War on Christmas (Music)
I have lost my headphones. Thus, no new posts (likely) until I return home. But I am curious, what was your favorite song you discovered this year? Perhaps tweet at me at @xmasunderground or leave a comment here.
Merry Christmas everyone.
I really just wanted to say that you have the absolute best indie Christmas blog out there. I make my own mix every year, and I always find inspiration from several of the songs you post each year. I looked to the past a lot for my mix this year, and with some digging, I found some gems. Kate Bush’s “December Will Be Magic Again” and Albert Hammond’s “Under the Christmas Tree” got a lot of plays, as well as The Salsoul Orchestra’s “Christmas Jollies” reissue. Their “Christmas Medley” is a thing of wonder. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you, keep up the good work, and Merry Christmas.
Dude, that’s so tough. I found more music that I loved this year than in many a year. But I’m going to throw a ringer into the mix. In Jingle Bell Rocks!, Andy Cirzan comes across a 45 by Clarence Reid called “Winter Man”. Somehow, that had escaped my attention all these years. I don’t need the 45 (not immediately, anyway), but I did buy the mp3.
For me, it was an old song… Silent Night performed by Paul Simon, Steve Martin and Billy Joel. But, between your blog and Stubby’s, i found a lot of great xmas music to work into my annual mix. Thanks for the great work. 🙂
Froggy Fresh – Reindeer Games and Postcode – Some Things Never Change are in the top three.
If I have to pick one, it would be Damien Jurado – Kalla Hus.
I do an annual xmas music show and used a lot of songs from your site on it this year! Some of my more obscure picks this year included:
Tennessee Ernie Ford, “Jingle-O the Brownie”
T Rex “Christmas Bop”
De La Soul “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa” (I will NEVER not play this on Xmas)
The Universal Robot Band “Disco Christmas”
Beach Boys “Santa’s Beard”
Most of the holiday music I enjoyed this year came from here or Stubby’s, so THAN YOU all for that! Froggy Fresh!! That always makes me smile, although I would choose “Christmas” (“…come check out my wish list…”). Heavy rotation would be “Oh My Golly” by the Flicks, the bo didleyious “Santa Claus Gonna Make it Right” by the Reverend Shawn Amos, Set It Off’s “This Christmas (I’ll Burn it to the Ground)” always makes me laugh and cheer along, “Secret Santa” by Here Come The Mummies always causes me to act the fool by singing along and dredging up my pathetic disco moves when it plays, and the Spectoring “Dear Santa” by Mr. Little Jeans. I think those songs will make 2014 memories. But I would be amiss if I did not mention the Joshua Thomas (Schurr) holiday collection Songs For the Snowblind which is always my backup plan when I need something pretty and classic. Happy New Year and thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!
It’s way too hard to pick just one. Sticking with songs that were released this year, here are a few of my favorites:
On Christmas – Dum Dum Girls
I’ll Be Stoned For Christmas – Dent May
Christmas Without A Kiss – Smoke Fairies (hard to pick just one off this album!)
Christmas Joy – Sam Halliday
When Christmas Comes – Los Campesinos
Nothing Left to Do (Let’s Make This Christmas Blue) – The Both
Love Disease (Christmas In New York) – Cafeine
It’s Different Now – Ice Choir
Thanks for all the work you put into the blog! I’d be lost without you and Stubby and the rest. Merry Christmas!
-Brendan
As Stubby said, it was an unbelievable year for new Christmas music.
One big surprise was Coming Home by Serenades.
It was mentioned either here or at Christmas A Go Go.
Not available as a download, but boy was it worth the price of the CD.
A soaring pop song that blows me away every time.
Thanks for all your great work this year!
Yeahhhhh buddy. That’s a great song. A friend tipped me off to that a few years back. Glad you liked it!
That one was mentioned here and I will forever be in Jim’s debt for posting it. What a great find.

Oh nice!!! Just heard it. How did I miss that?? A beauty. Thanks guys.
Hey you guys….One of the greatest Christmas tracks I ever heard is Tom Brislin’s (w/Spiraling) mash of “Do You Hear What I Hear/Baba O’Reilly”. Classic sirs, classic I tell ya……
There are a lot of wonderful Xmas songs this year. I enjoyed Sofia Talvik’s A Long Way Home very much. It’s contains longing and real life drama. My runner-up is the Guardian charity single Snowfall on TV. And the Romanian band Moonlight Breakfast delivered the great tune Gingerbread.
Roaming the internet all year for Christmas songs, my pick for this year’s Christmas was:
Cressida – Winter is coming again (1970)
Rigby – (it’s X-mas Night Would you) Pleas come home (2013)
The Both – Nothing left to do (2014)
The Common Linnets – Christmas Around me (2014)
Sandaid – We’ve still got Christmas (2011)
Hope to find more on this blog for next years selection. Bye!
My favorite piece of xmas music in this season is the whole rough shop thing … great!
Thanks for all our work at Christmas Underground … and please go on for decades …
Have a nice 2015
